The Simhastha Kumbh is an unrivalled celebration in India. The most popular legend regarding the origin of Kumbh Melas is the Samudra Manthan or 'churning of the ocean'. Gods and demons competed ercely in the churning in search of the divine nectar of immortality. During this epic battle to capture the Urn (Kumbh) containing the nectar, drops of the precious liquid fell on four places – Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Nashik and Ujjain. Hence, river Kshipra became the enhancer of life and to celebrate this event since then the grand festival came in vogue. Kumbh Mela, is held once every twelve years at these four places and attracts millions of devotees.

#Narmada-Parikrama -- Types of #Parikrama

Several variants of Narmada Parikrama have developed over the years as explained below . For a brief description about Narmada Parikrama  click here

Mundmal Parikrama

This is most popular from of Narmada Parikrama. It derives its name from’s garland’ as it involves a garlanding journey around Narmada, generally commences either at Amarkantak (the source of Narmada) or at Omkareshwar and after a complete circumambulation, keeping Narmada to one’s right hand side (Pradakshina) comes to finish at the point of start. This Parikrama is an on-foot march involving a riverside walking of at least 2624 km in a period of 3 years,3months and 13 days.Usually people do this Parikrama in small groups.

Jalahari Parikrama

This form of Parirama derives its name from jalahari, the yoni shaped seat of Shiva Lingawhich makes a double channel Around the Linga. It is a journey along both the banks of Narmada never crossing her. It involves to and fro journey on both the sides of river. A Parikramawasi traverses same bank of Narmada twice which amounts to double the journey compared to Mundmal Parikrama. It does not involve crossing of Narmada at the gulf of Cambey or Amerkantak.

Hanumant Parikrama

This form of Parikrama derives its name from Hanuman, the monkey god. It is a kind of jumping parikrama in which one can cross Narmada as and when desired. This kind of Parikrama is popular among tourist.

Dandwat Parikrama

This is one of the difficult forms of Parikrama involving at least 1000 Bhumi Namaskar (Saluting the mother earth in Dandwat-lying face down prostrate on ground-in reverence and not very common. Very few people dare this from of Parikrama.

Markandeya Parkrama

It is the most extensive and time-taking form of Narmada Parikrama involving a circumbulation not only around Narmada but also around her tributaries. It owes its name to Markandeya- the ancient hermit who spent his life near Narmada. Narmada basin, one should note, is an elongated strip of land in central India. There are 41 major tributaries of Narmada of which 19 joins her on right or northern bank whereas 22 join her on the left or southern bank. Walking and worshiping around Narmada covering these tributaries can be termed as Markandeya Parikrama.

Vayu Parikrama

This can not be actually called a Parikrama in real sense but a mention of this event is necessary for its historical significance.Sri Anil Madhav dave, a senior politician but an amateur pilot has undertaken the first ever Vayu Parikrama (air circumambulation) of Narmada in 2006. Sri Dave, who is an ardent Narmada devotee, undertook this poioneering parikrama to lay foundation of a massive movement for Narmada Conservation. Though not prevalent currently, possobolotoes of such Vayu Parikrama of Narmada can not be ruled out in near future.

#MAA-NARMADA #PARIKRAMA

#Narmada Parikrama

An Introduction

The river Narmada is counted as one of the seven holiest rivers in Hinduism. Hence, Narmada Parikrama is one of the most religious things a Hindu can do. The importance of Narmada River can be estimated from the fact that the pilgrims perform a holy circumambulation of the river. Many Sadhus and pilgrims walk on foot from the Arabian Sea at Bharuch in Gujarat.

As you visit to the Narmada River, you may come across Sadhus performing the sacred act. During the journey, you will come across various small temples, ashrams and holy bathing sites. The 13 nights and 14 days journey will take you on a whirlwind tour of two different states- Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Some popular holy sites that you will visit during the journey include Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain, Maheshwar, Amarkantak and Narmada Udgam among others. Also, there are various popular types of Parikramas, please click here to know more.

Why do a Narmada Parikrama?

The ancient Hindu knew that walking around sources of positive energy would charge one with the same positive energy. So they devised the system of doing a Parikrama - walking around in a clockwise circle of maa Narmada.

As it is rightly said "Ganga Snan, Yamuna Pan, Tapi Smaaran and Reva Darshan" is the way to attain 'Moksha'.

Narmada Parikrama is one of the oldest tradition - almost 7000 years back Markandeya Rishi performed Narmada Parikrama. You will perhaps not believe that Markandeya Rishi performed Great Prakrima of Narmada mother. Parikrama is also referred to as Pradakshina. NarmadeHar! Narmade Har! NarmadeHar! Narmade Har !

About Ma Narmada

Narmada Har. Narmada is the daughter of Har or Shiva Her name is Narmada. Narmada was born out of Shiv’s sweat, she is Shivsutaa and Jatashankari,; she is Mekalsuta – the daughter of Mount Mekal where Amarkantak is situated, and she is Reva, the ever playful. She is believed to be the first river to manifest in this creation. She is immortal; the immortal sage Markandeya explains to Yudhishthir in Narmada Purana how he had seen Narmada survive various kalps – creations. One name of Narmada is ‘immortal’ : Na-mruta tena narmada. Narmada is seventh largest river in the Indian subcontinent . It forms the traditional boundary between North and South India .The source of the Narmada is Amarkantak and flows over 1,312 km through the Gulf of combay (Khambat) into the Arabian Sea India’s best hardwood forests are found in the Narmada River basin.

The Tribes of Narmada Valley are the Bhil Tribes. Gonds and Baigas are the most significant tribes in the Mandla AREA. The Narmada Valley is layered block of the Earth's that dropped down relative to the blocks on either side due to ancient spreading of the Earth's crust. Two normal faults, known as the Narmada North fault and Narmada South fault, crust parallel to the river's course, and mark the boundary between the Narmada block and the Vindhya and Satpura blocks or Horsts which rose relative to the Narmada. The Chadoggya Upanishad (1.1.2). says that essence of all beings, is earth, and the essence of the earth is, water. Rivers are an important part of water cosmology. They are worshiped as mother goddesses. Many rivers have been mentioned and worshiped in Rigveda (nadi stuti verse 5 and 6) carrying perennial waters. River banks have always been the cradles of civilization. Like any mother, a river too gives birth to civilization and nourishes it.

Mother Narmada is a spiritual and Wealth Heritage.

More than one-half of the world's major rivers are being seriously depleted and polluted, degrading and poisoning the surrounding ecosystems, thus threatening the health and livelihood of people who depend upon them for irrigation, drinking and industrial water. Lord Krishna says in Geeta every one has the duty to respect the right. Environment friendly life is the duty of the time. Garbage segregation answer to a neat and beautiful nation. Give our children a clean world .they have the right for it. To keep Narmada clean is easy to clean a polluted River is difficult.
